Today the ship was scheduled to spend the day anchored in the harbor for Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands. Most passengers were looking forward to walking among penguins at various places on a drive from Stanley. Unfortunately, the weather did not permit any tendering to shore. Winds in excess of 45 mph resulted in waves crashing over the dock where our small tender boats were supposed to land. Thus, our captain made a wise decision to cancel all shore excursions and we are now on our way to Antarctica, less than two hours after we anchored in the Stanley harbor.

Fortunately, we had been here in 2012 and had the penguin experience of a lifetime (walking among thousands of penguins, close enough to touch them – if touching had been permitted). Accordingly, we were not disappointed for us as much as for those who missed out.

A Celebrity ship, the Eclipse, was also anchored and had about 200 of their passengers already on shore when they also canceled their port visit. Our captain had been in contact with the captain of the Eclipse. As we sailed away, Celebrity was trying to figure out how to safely get those passengers back on board.
