Wow! I had almost forgotten how much we love being on a cruise. So much fun all day and into the evening – whether on shore or on a sea day! Blogging seems to have been a lower priority than all that keeps us so busy. Loving it all!!!
We stopped at Dominica on January 8 and bargained for a trolley tour of Roseau, including the wonderful Botanical Gardens park with over 100 species of trees from all over the world. $30 each for the tour versus $59 if we had purchased it on board the ship.
On the 9th we went on a 3-hour whale and dolphin excursion. Very rough ocean (especially for Dave) for our small boat with 15 passengers, but no sea life sightings on this day.
Yesterday, we went to Devils Island in French Guiana. It was the site of a horrific prison for French criminals during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The movie Papillon (original in about 1970 and remake in 2017) chronicled the true story of one of the prisoners. We toured the well-preserved remains of most of the prison buildings. It was our first of a number of ports where we have to be tendered to shore on one of the ship’s lifeboats, rather than being docked at shore.
On board, we have had great lectures about some of the upcoming places we will visit and about various other topics (ecology, the oceans, history, pirates, etc.). We have enjoyed a magician, a comedian, singers, instrument players and an energetic Holland America singing/dancing troupe. Excellent food and overall service with two formal nights thus far.
