Two stops in Uruguay and one in Argentina:

On the 23rd we had a shore excursion in Punta del Esta, Uruguay. Perhaps the cleanest city we have ever been to. No trash of any kind on streets or anywhere else that we could see.

Highlights of our tour included the Ralli museum, with art from all over South America, including paintings by Chagall and sculptures by Dali. We also visited the Museum Taller de Casapueblo, a house and hotel reminiscent of some of Gaudi’s structures in Barcelona. It was built over a period of 30 years by Carlos Paez Vilaro (with a few friends), who had no knowledge of construction principles. A photo with Vilaro is below.

On the 24th we spent the day in Buenos Aries. We had done a great tour when we spent a few days here in 2012 so today we took a hop-on-hop-off bus with Roger and Sandy. We stayed on the bus for the 3+ hour round trip because it was close to 90 degrees, too hot for some of us to be doing much walking. Then Roger and Sandy returned to the ship while we found a cute restaurant for an afternoon rest and snack.

We watched the movie Evita last evening, helping us to recall some of Argentina’s history in the early and mid-1900s. That added to our enjoyment of the day’s sights, including the balcony where Eva Peron (“Evita”) gave her farewell speech as she was dying of cancer in her early thirties.

Our bus traveled twice on 9 de Julio Avenue, the widest street in the world. It has up to 22 lanes of traffic and is approximately 140 meters wide (about 224 yards or more than two football fields long!). The street name honors Argentina’s Independence Day, July 9, 1816.

Overnight the ship backtracked to Uruguay – to Montevideo for the 24th. This was another port that we had previously visited, so we rode on another hop-on-hop-off bus and thoroughly enjoyed our two-hour ride. Then we walked for a while, visiting some shops and the beautiful Iglesia de San Francisco (Church of St. Francis).

Now onward to Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands three days from now.

  1. We have been following your adventure, including your post on the Falklands. Hopefully the rough seas will not follow you to Antarctica.
The picture of the two of you in formal attire was wonderful. I really do not remember a time when you both looked so good!
    Have fun!

  2. Hey Aunt Mary and Dave. Today is my first day following your adventure online. So happy the two of you have this opportunity. I’ll be checking in regularly. Thanks for sharing your adventure.
