In Cairns (pronounced “cans”), we chose to go inland instead of to the Great Barrier Reef – a great decision. Those going to the reef had very rough water and one of the boat’s engines failed, requiring a turn back to shore without getting to the reef. Most got sick.

It was a rainy day, but it might as well have been sunny because we enjoyed the day immensely.

We opted for an all-day Kuranda cable car and railway tour. We took a 15-mile cable car ride above the canopy of the Kuranda rain forest. Unfortunately, we were so mesmerized by the scenery, we forgot to take photos except at one the cable car stations!

At quaint Kuranda Village, we did some sightseeing and I went for a three-mile hike in the forest. Then we ate at Frogs (a restaurant) with our guide and the other two people on our tour.

Heading back to Cairns, we rode in a vintage train on narrow gauge tracks. 15 tunnels and 37 bridges. Lots of fun!

Little did we know that this would be our last port before the end of our cruise. On the next day (at sea), the captain made the first announcement of a change of itinerary that within three more days would result in the end of the cruise.
